How to Clean Your LCD

One of the more expensive parts of your laptop computer is the LCD or liquid crystal display. The LDC display is the ‘eyes’ of your computer and if you damage it by cleaning it, you may be out several hundreds of dollars to replace it.

Most LCD displays are used for laptop computers which unfortunately, apt to be used in more places where the display can be dirtied than your flat display desktop computer. Coffee houses, college dorm rooms and kitchen tables are prime places for spills and smudges to occur on your formally pristine laptop. Cleaning your display can be disastrous, if you treat your LCD the way you would an old fashioned CRT monitor display. Did you know you can destroy the pixels of your display by pressing on the LCD with your fingertips trying to remove the splash of double mocha latte your roommate left on your laptop? Did you know Windex can be poison for your prized wide-display monitor? Here are some tips drawn from the major computer manufacturers on caring and cleaning your LCD.

Check with the manufacturer of your particular monitor before cleaning. Most displays come with written instructions or you can check with tech support.

1) Shut off the laptop and unplug it from the wall. You will be able to see the smudges and streaks easier with the monitor off.

2) Do not touch the display with hard or sharp objects. This includes your fingers!

3) Use a clean, dry, lint-free cloth and gently stroke the cloth in one direction from the top to the bottom of the display.

4) If the display is still dirty after the gentle use of a dry cloth, try using a commercially prepared solution made for cleaning the LCD. Put a small amount of the solution onto the cloth and stroke again in the same direction, from top to bottom.

5) If you don’t have LCD cleaning solution you can try the following: Be sure to check with your manufacturer first. Each one may have different requirements.

water (some manufacturers state to never use plain water, but water with vinegar instead), isoprophyl alcohol, or hexane.

6) Most manufacturers recommend you NEVER use the following:

acetone, ethyl alcohol, toluene, ethyl acid, ammonia, or methyl chloride. This includes regular Windex cleaner. These cleaners contain chemicals that could react with your display causing the pixels to be permanently damaged.

Think of your LCD as a delicate eye for your laptop that needs special care and consideration. And keep your coffee off the screen!

Could Netbooks Be the Notebook Future?

This week is IDF, and one of the platforms Intel is highlighting is called Netbooks, based on its Atom processor. I struggle with this concept because a Netbook feels and looks like a small notebook and the initial offerings act like notebook computers. The old saying goes if it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, chances are it is a duck.

But Netbooks promise a different experience, and I’m convinced we haven’t yet seen the second shoe drop.

Let’s talk about that second shoe today.

The Netbook’s Strength and Weakness

Let’s start with weakness first. These products are not high-performing, if you measure performance by graphics and processor speed. You won’t be doing photo editing, gaming or any truly processor- or graphics-intensive work on them. Multi-tasking won’t be their greatest strength, either. Some are too small, in terms of screen and keyboard size, for many users.

Where they match notebooks is in connectivity and compatibility. Netbooks generally have the same wired and wireless capabilities as regular notebooks, and they will run a full OS (typically Linux or Windows XP, with some capable of running Vista).

The products’ strengths are battery life, size and price, making the product potentially more appealing to the most mobile of notebook users.

To net this out, this product is vastly enhanced by connected solutions, but at a disadvantage against a laptop as a traditional desktop replacement.

Enter the Cloud

Much like Apple did with iTunes and the iPod, the real opportunity for a Netbook lies not in the hardware or the applications that run directly on it, but in the services to which the device connects. This may be the ideal platform for a blended mobile thin client offering, where the device is mostly connected via WAN, Wi-Fi or Wimax but has the capability to be used on a plane or otherwise disconnected in a pinch.

It still has enough power and battery life to play music or watch videos, and it can even play remote or local Flash-based casual games, making it acceptable to a wide audience of users who also like its aggressive price, small size and relatively good battery life.

Given the security advantages of cloud-based applications (the data generally remains with the more secure remote location) and the increasing popularity of applications like Salseforce.com, Google Docs, Jooce, Evernote, TwitterFone, Blist and G.ho.st, this seems like the right product (if bundled properly) at the right time.

Refining the Offering

I’ve been using a couple of these for a little bit now, and I’m convinced that the current operating system choices aren’t showcasing this product well enough. You get Ubuntu Linux, XP and occasionally Vista Basic. In other words, you get your choice of an incompatible OS (that looks old), a compatible OS that is old, or a crippled version of a new OS. What I think this class of product needs is an OS that is specifically designed for it, much like what Apple did for the iPhone.

Other users think that the gOS Ubuntu variant is likely better than the slightly modified version I’ve seen so far, and WindowBlinds makes a big difference in terms of making the user interface (XP or Vista Basic) seem more advanced.

I also think services like SugarSync and Live Mesh, which better mirror what is on a full-sized laptop or desktop system, go a long way to making this generation of product vastly more useful. I’ve always thought the missed opportunity with a small laptop like this is that it could be used in conjunction with a desktop computer, rather than instead of it.

In the end, though, I think this is the birth of something interesting, and eventually those that are currently doing thin clients and blade PCs will likely come around to the idea that these may be an excellent solution to temporarily bridge the gap between the wired clients they use and the mobile clients we want at an affordable price.

Whatever the result, there is clearly a change in the wind.

Text Messaging – 9 Tips To Use Text Messaging to Communicate With Conference Delegates

When using text messages to communicate with conference delegates, it’s very important to keep in mind that they will stop taking note of your messages if you abuse their trust and send them messages they don’t want, or if you overwhelm them with messages.

The text messaging platform is intended to help you communicate with your participants, not to alienate them. Here are a few tips on how you can use text messaging to communicate with your conference participants:

1. Welcome delegates to the conference - A welcome message from the conference organizers when you arrive in a strange city gives delegates feeling of warmth and welcome.

You can also use that first text message to provide an emergency number should they need help navigating to the conference venue. This is especially useful if many of your conference participants are from out of town.

2. Make main program announcements – Use text messaging to inform conference participants of program changes. This is very helpful when delegates coordinate their conference participation. It’s very frustrating for delegates to make an effort to attend a session, only to learn when they get to the room where the session is held that:

a) The session has been cancelled

b) There has been a last-minute speaker change. The latter one is especially critical in instances where delegates choose to attend a session because of the speaker.

3. Announce fringe program activities- You can use text messaging to send notices of fringe activities taking place alongside the main program.

4. Communicate with the media - You can use text messaging to communicate with the media to inform them of scheduled media briefings, and conferences that may be newsworthy as the conference unfolds.

5. Highlight activities of exhibitors - You can use a text messaging to announce competitions/winners/give-aways/unique presentations by conference exhibitors. This is a value-add for your exhibitors, as it allows them to communicate with conference participants who may not have come to their exhibition stands. Also, advertising messages may also be attached to your text messages, at an additional charge.

There are however some issues you should take into consideration if you choose to use this communication channel:

6 . Gain delegate’s consent - Some delegates may not appreciate constant communication with the conference organizers. There are also people who completely despise text messages. Your registration form should therefore include a specific subscription facility for text messages. Each message sent subsequent to registration should also include the option to unsubscribe at any time.

7 . Keep the volume low - Don’t overwhelm conference participants with text messages. If the conference is very big, with a varied multi-track program, you may choose to use text messaging only for critical announcements, such as program changes and media notifications.

8 . Keep to a schedule – You may also choose to bundle your announcements, sending say morning, mid-day and late afternoon communiqués, rather than sending the announcements real-time. This way, you are not in danger of clocgging people’s cellphones with text messages, inconveniencing them. Howecer, if your conference is small, you are better able to be real-time and to be more creative with your messaging.

9. Text messages cost money – Keep in mind that in some countries, users pay to receive messages. This is further motivation to keep the volume low. If possible, you can sponsor the delegates’ costs through advertising revenue by attaching advertising messages to the text messages sent.

Five Hot Tech Gifts For the Boss Or Employee

Finding the right Boss Gift or Employee gift is always a problem at this time of the year, so it might prove helpful if you turned towards technology for a solution. Every holiday season has special hot tech gift items that everyone wants to see on their wish list, and this season is proving no different. So this side of a Zhu Zhu Hamster, here are five tech gifts you might consider putting on your list for that favorite boss or employee:

1. E-Readers. In case you’re wondering, E-Readers is just as the name indicates, these are hand-held electronic devices which let users read books. They are also called digital or electronic readers. Probably the best known E-Reader is the Amazon Kindle which was introduced in 2007 and according to a recent Time article, Amazon has already sold 1.7 million units. Not to be outdone, Barnes & Noble has launched its own E-Reader call the NOOK, which retails for around $260. There’s enough memory for holding 1,500 books (2 GB) and there’s a microSD slot which could give you another 16 GB more.

Other companies are also offering E-Readers such as the Sony Reader, Asus Eee-reader and Irex Digital Reader. According to the Association of American Publishers, total revenue from digital-book downloads has risen 149% this year, while they estimate e-book readers sales to top 3 million by Dec. 31. Plus, according to Forrester Research around 1 million of these gadgets could be sold this holiday season, and sales in 2010 are projected to double, to 6 million.

2. Netbooks. These are the smaller cousins of the laptop, often referred to as mini-laptops. They usually have screens of 10 inches, although some displays can be slightly larger or smaller. Netbooks have smaller Intel Atom processors, one GB of RAM and run Windows XP. Prices are well under $500. Keep in mind, the category of “netbook” is a fairly recent one – Asustek launched the netbook category when it released its first Eee PC in the fall of 2007.

Some of the most popular Netbooks include ASUS Eee PC 1000HE, Lenovo Ideapad S10, Acer Aspire One, MSI Wind U100 and the HP Mini 2140. But shop around because there are other very good Netbooks on the market which also deserve a prominent spot under anyone’s Christmas tree.

3. Blu-ray DVD Players. Blu-ray technology which offers glorious High Definition 1080p images and Superior sound, is becoming extremely popular with the buying public. Prices for Blu-ray DVD Players are also coming down which is further fueling the demand for these high-tech items of the moment. Keep in mind, to fully enjoy the benefits of a Blu-ray system you will need a full 1080p High Definition Television, the larger the better!

Some of the best rated Blu-ray players include the Sony PlayStation 3, OPPO BDP-83, LG BD390, Panasonic DMP-BD60k and the Samsung BD-P3600 Blu-ray DVD Player. Again, prices have fallen drastically and if you shop around you may even find ones listed for under $100.

4. Smart Phones. PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants), also known as smart phones are always an appropriate gift for a boss or an employee. These hand-held electronic devices are becoming even more dazzling and feature rich. Pretty soon, they will probably be bringing you your morning coffee! All joking aside, the smart phone is proving to be a popular gift as prices have dropped. The Apple iPhone has also opened up this market to a broader audience, further fueling the demand for this popular tech gift.

Some of the best rated smart phones and PDAs include the whole Blackberry line, the Palm TX, the Sony CLIE series and of course, the Apple iPhone. Again, shopping around will get you a lower price but be wary of Free PDAs offers in return for a service plan, unless that’s what you’re looking for.

5. Gaming Laptops. These laptops have high-performance Graphics Chips, fast powerful processors, tons of memory (including dedicated Video RAM), large high resolution displays usually backed up with a Blu-ray Optical drive. Despite their somewhat flashy exteriors, gaming laptops are not only used for gaming, many business people, graphic artists, architects, video producers… enjoy the benefits of having a powerful laptop which can do heavy-duty graphics without crashing. Of course, any boss or employee can also play video games on them too.

Some highly rated gaming laptop include the ASUS G71Gx-A2, Toshiba Qosmio X505 – Q850, MSI GT740, Alienware M17x and Rock X790 (Clevo D900F) which is basically the same laptop as the Eurocom D900F Panther, Falcon Northwest Fragbook DRX and the AVADirect Clevo D900F Core i7. Clevo is the Taiwanese OEM (original equipment manufacturer) of high-end quality laptop components, which these ODMs (original design manufacturers) such as Rock, Sager and Eurocom use to build their gaming rigs.

Check over these five high-tech devices and you may find a suitable boss gift and/or employee gift that will be very much appreciated by the receiver. Shop around and you will probably find many of these tech gifts at a very suitable price; if all else fails, go with the Zhu Zhu Hamster!
